At Ian Ramsey CE Academy, we have ambition for all, ensuring every student can access, engage with and succeed in Art & Design. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, students develop creativity, confidence and visual literacy while exploring a range of artists, cultures, techniques and media.
Students learn to observe, experiment, refine and communicate ideas, developing resilience, independence and critical thinking through the creative process. Rooted in our Christian vision, ‘Together to learn, to grow, to serve,’ Art & Design encourages students to value creativity, appreciate diverse perspectives and use their talents to contribute positively to their communities and the wider world.
As students progress, they become confident and reflective artists who can investigate, develop and realise their ideas with increasing independence. At Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to study GCSE Art & Design, deepening their artistic knowledge, refining their skills and preparing for further study and careers within the creative industries.
DEEP Curriculum Overview

The initial focus widens and develops pupils’ experience and skills using a variety of media, materials and techniques. Exploring tonal values, with control of a pencil to develop tone and directional light and shade. At GCSE, pupils develop their artistic skills at a DEEPER level. Teaching and learning focuses on enabling pupils to increase their proficiency in handling and applying media. Specific tasks have been developed in order to strengthen skills, such as analysis and evaluation of their own work and that of others to understand visual impact and application.
